Quinta do Muro
eastern Algarve

Ria Formosa Natural Park
near Tavira, Portugal

Welcome Home Retreats returns to Portugal, to a house where the garden runs to the lagoon and the day keeps its own time.

The Algarve most people picture first is the western stretch: sea stacks, beach bars, marina towns that hum with summer traffic. The eastern Algarve is a different landscape entirely. Past Faro, the coastline softens. The Ria Formosa Natural Park opens along the shore, a protected lagoon of tidal flats, salt marshes and wading birds that has more in common with a nature reserve than a holiday coast. The villages here, Cacela Velha and Tavira among them, still follow a local rhythm. Markets in the morning, quiet through the afternoon, dinner when the light turns.

The path leaves from the lower garden, past the olive groves and down the stone steps that connect the property to the coast. Within minutes the ground changes. Hard earth gives way to salt flat, dry scrub to marsh grass, and the way before you opens into the wide tidal basin of the Ria Formosa. The light at this hour is particular: low, copper, the kind that turns shallow water into hammered metal.

The lagoon

A lagoon is not the sea

It keeps its own time. The water moves slowly, governed by the pull of the tides rather than the wind. Herons stand in the shallows. Spoonbills pass in loose formation. In the cooler months, flamingos gather in the further channels, feeding in water that barely reaches their knees.

The Ria Formosa does not perform. It simply continues, and after a while you begin to match its pace. RISE calls you to slow down and align with that pace: to soften, to deepen, and to unfold.

The house

An architectural delight

Quinta do Muro was designed and built by French architect Pierre-Louis Faloci, winner of the Équerre d'Argent in 1996, France's highest prize for architecture. The house faces south towards the ocean, across a lagoon that changes with every tide.

Yoga in the open air
